When stating a fact in Gaelic the word used for "if" is - Ma the negative form is Mur eil
Examples
Ma tha thu fuar cuir ort do chòta - If you're cold put on your coat
Ma tha sin ceart bidh mi glè thoilichte - If that's right i'll be very pleased
Fòn a-màireach mur eil thu a' tighinn - Phone tomorrow if you aren't coming
But when a supposition is being made Nam/Nan is the Gaelic word we need
Examples
Nam b' e Eireannach a th' annam... - If i were an Irishman...
Nam bithinn-sa nam thidsear... - If i were a teacher....
Nan robh mi na bu shine... - If i were older...
